Hall Effect Experiment

Hall Effect Experiment

Hall Effect Experiment is designed to study various parameters in semiconductors. The resistivity measurements of semiconductors cannot reveal whether one or two types of carries are present; nor distinguish between them. However, this information can be obtained from Hall Coefficient measurements, which are also basic tools for the determination of the followings.

Experiments
  • To measure the Hall voltage as a function of the magnetic flux density.
  • Determine the Hall coefficient and the sign of the charge carriers.
  • Calculate the Hall mobility and the carrier density.
Sample : Crystal (n-type / p type) High-sensitivity InSb Hall element
Digital Millivoltmeter meter / Constant Current Source : This unit consists of a digital millivoltmeter and constant current power supply the voltage and probe current can be read on the same digital panel meter through a selector switch.

Digital Millivoltmeter
Range : 200mV, 2V, 20V (Resolution : 100µV min.)
Impedance : 1 MW
Accuracy : ±0.1% (±1digit)

Constant current Power supply
Current : 0-20mA variable (Resolution : 10 mA)
Accuracy : ± 0.2 % of the reading ±1digit
Load regulation 0.05% for no to full load
Line regulation 0.05% for ±10% variation.

Hall Probe N type indium Arsenide (one can also used N / P type Ge crystal)
Hall Probe sample crystal to study the hall effect experiment is mounted in a hall probe with aluminum handle.
Material : High-sensitivity InSb Hall
Dimensions : Thickness, d = 0.8 mm
 Length, l = 2.2 mm
 Width, w = 1.26 mm

Electromagnet : Application compact electromagnet is specially designed for Hall effect, Magneto-resistance and Magnetic Susceptibility by Quinck's Experiments
Pole Pieces: 45 mm diameter flat.
Field : 7K Gauss at 10mm air gap
Power Requirement : -0-4A if coils are connected in series.

Constant current Power supply
Application : IC regulated Constant current source
Current : 0-4A (smoothly adjustable)
Line regulation : ±0.1% for ±10 % mains changes
Load Regulation : ±0.1% for no to full load
Display : 3 ½ digit 7 segment LED display.
Protection : Protected against overload / short circuit.

Digital Gauss meter
  • Wide Range (1G to 10KG)
  • Excellent Stability
  • Interchangeable Hall probes
Application : Wide application in industry where accurate measurements of magnetic field is required. Easy interchangeability of probe enables both axial and transverse field measurement with same unit.
  • Range 10KG
  • Accuracy ±0.5%
  • Display 3½ digit, 7 segment LED display with auto polarity and overflow indication.
  • Transducer Hall probe

Hall Effect Setup
Hall effect setup is used to connect sample Hall probe input to constant current source (with Digital Display of current max. 19.99mA) and output to digital Millivolt meter.
  • Connect Hall probe four Pin male connect to Hall Probe Socket.
  • Connect Voltage Banana socket to mV meter section of digital millivoltmeter / current source.
  • Current Banana Socket to current source socket of digital mV meter / current source with Banana Plug Lead provided with the instrument.
